A large plaster of Paris, hand painted, "Dunlop Man" golf ball advertising figure. This wonderful, and large scale figure is full of character, and very stylishly dressed for his round of golf! Two tone shoes, plus fours, and Tam hat and scarf. This type of outfit was very common on British golf courses during the the mid to early 20th Century.
This figure is appealing in many ways, but for two areas of interest; Golfing, obviously. But, also early advertising. This represents an early attempt to make the Dunlop golf balls attract the attention of the amateur golfer. He was designed to sit in the pro-shop and help advertise the Dunlop golf ball collection. His head is a Dunlop golf ball! The front two sides of the soft square base are hand painted with the slogan; "We Play Dunlop".
This figure was made in two sizes, with this being the largest, and most rare. The hand painted finish free from damage. An unfortunate condition issue with these figures can be the missing the golf clubs from the bag. There are three present here; A driver and two irons. It would appear from research that perhaps three are missing. They are metal, with only a half length shaft, so they often become separated from the golfer. There was also a leather strap across the shoulder from the bag. Sadly this has also perished and is missing.
Overall, the figure is in super condition. Being that they are made from a fragile material, if they are ever dropped, or knocked, damage can occur, which is why even finding them at all is rare. Made in England, circa 1940's.
